Most people get initiated to music, in some form, in school, and wonder if they could be good at playing the guitar. My response to them is simple...if people don't run away from you when you sing then chances are you could theoretically play the guitar, or any other instrument. It is my belief that a person needs to have an ear for music in order to master an instrument. It is a gift, that you either do or don't have. Another just as important quality is p-a-t-i-e-n-c-e! Ask your friends or family if THEY think that you could be a good guitarist. Tell them to be honest and that it won't hurt your feelings if they don't think so...and then accept their oppinion! Really! I have seen too many people waste hundreds, or even thousands of dollars on instruments and un-needed sound equipment, only to end up giving up a few months later, and selling it all for a fraction of what they paid it. There is a certain pawn-shop just beside Steve's Music in downtown Montreal who has made a killing on people in this situation, and it makes me ill to think about it. If you do fall into the category of those who truly do have a "knack" for music, and the guitar is the instrument you'd like to learn to play, then start by getting yourself a good quality "used" accoustic guitar first! It will help you to develop your technique, and strengthen the muscles in your hands and fingers. Remember, you will be teaching your hands to speak a whole new language. Music schools and most reputable music stores are usually able to steer you towards something that will make learning enjoyable...and that's what its all about...quenching that need inside to express yourself through music! There is nothing that compares to the feeling you get when your guitar (or in my case, my bass and my keyboard) becomes a true extension of yourself. All of a sudden you feel complete, and your instrument takes over all verbal communications...it is an experience that you will crave more and more...live it and you'll never be the same again! I wish you all the best, and hope that my words might steer you in the right direction. Dan Beach (aka TheEar) RealGuitarVideos.com |
